A talk at the 6th edition of Semana Design Rio, held at the Museu de Arte Moderna (MAM) in Rio de Janeiro. The presentation explored how parametric design processes can draw inspiration from natural patterns and organisms, connecting biomimetics, visual programming and digital fabrication through real-world projects developed at Atelier Marko Brajovic.
Seven Principles from Nature
The talk introduced seven key principles observed in nature and applied them as conceptual drivers for parametric design:
- Collectivity, inspired by the forest: the interdependence and inter-relationship between individuals in a group.
- Reciprocity, inspired by lichen: connection through beneficial exchange between parties.
- Metamorphosis, inspired by the butterfly: complete transformation of form and behavior.
- Resilience, inspired by the immortal jellyfish: systems and organisms capable of resisting crises and changes.
- Mimicry, inspired by the owl butterfly: the evolutionary ability of an organism to copy traits and patterns from another organism.
- Evolution: changes in the characteristics of animal and plant populations over successive generations.
- Self-organization: the ability of a system to organize its components or elements spontaneously and intentionally.
From Nature to Computation
The presentation framed three complementary approaches to design: behaviorology (how people do), phenomenology (how physics do) and biomimetics (how nature does). It then explored the role of visual programming as a bridge between these natural principles and computational tools, arguing that nature is a designer with 3.8 billion years of experience.
Project Case Studies
Several projects by Atelier Marko Brajovic were presented as case studies demonstrating these principles in practice, including the Brazilian Pavilion at Expo Milan 2015 (with Studio Arthur Casas), the Parada Coca-Cola at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the Camper Together stores in São Paulo, Hong Kong, Melbourne and Milan, the O3 Pavilion at Expo Revestir 2017, the Casa Ninho Docol at Expo Revestir 2018, the Nike Air Guitar installation at Red Bull Station in São Paulo and the Heineken Live Your Music installation at MECA Inhotim.
